Advice for Filing your Tax Return!
The tax laws are complex, and they change every year. Here are some suggestions that can help make filing your tax return a little easier.
| 1. |
Start early – any unpleasant chore becomes more difficult if it is left until the last minute, so get an early start on filing your return. Get out last year's return and review it. Your prior return or a tax organizer can be a real timesaver, and a money saver as well, since it jogs your memory concerning income and deductions you
might otherwise overlook. |
| 2. |
Summarize deductions – go through your checkbook, credit card statements, and receipts for cash purchases looking for possible deductions. Add up the totals of medical expenses, union dues, mortgage interest, real estate taxes, charitable donations, work-related expenses, personal property taxes and any other items that you think may
be tax deductible. |
| 3. |
Gather tax documents that you receive – save all documents you receive that contain information you will need for tax return preparation. Typical forms include: |
a. |
Form W-2 – Statement of wages |
b. |
Form 1099-R – Distributions from pensions, annuities, retirement or profit-sharing plans, IRAs, insurance contracts, etc. |
c. |
Form 1099 – Interest, dividends, royalties, etc. |
d. |
Form 1099-G – State and local income tax returns |
e. |
Form 1099-B and Brokerage Statements – Sales of securities |
f. |
K-1s – Income and deductions from partnerships, S corporations, trusts, estates |

Personal Bankruptcies – Reaching Record Levels
Bankruptcy law allows a debtor, who is unable to pay his or her creditors, to resolve his or her debts through the division of the debtor's assets among the creditors. Reports from bankruptcy courts across the country reflect a record number of personal bankruptcy filings in the United States in 2002. Sadly, the numbers for 2003 show an increase over the prior
year. It is true that for some bankruptcy is the most viable option; but for others, it might be a choice made too quickly and without objective, professional advice.
Declaring bankruptcy may seem to be the "quick fix" for a multitude of financial difficulties, but in the long term, having such a mark on your financial history can cause far more problems than it resolves. Obtaining credit for good debt, such as a home or college education, saving for a comfortable retirement, or just buying reliable transportation, could become
difficult or even impossible with a past bankruptcy on your credit report.
If you are considering filing for personal or business bankruptcy, please thoroughly consider all of your options. If a divorce, the loss of a job, credit card debt or a failing business is driving your decision, take the time to review your current debts, assets and/or accounts receivables and payables –
then give us a call.
There may be other options available of which you are unaware that may help you avoid bankruptcy court. And should we determine that a bankruptcy filing is the only option for you, we can help you understand the tax ramifications.
We will help you review all of the options available and will provide guidance to help you make an informed decision that is in your best interest. Contact your local Kemper CPA Group LLP office for confidential and professional assistance.

Don't Know Much about . . . Life Insurance?
If you don't know much about life insurance, help is on the way. The first lesson is learning the lingo. Then your financial professional can help you determine how much and what type of coverage is
right for you.
Two Main Types
The two broad categories of life insurance are term and permanent life insurance. Term insurance covers you for a specific length of time and pays a death benefit to your beneficiary if you die while the policy is in effect. Its relatively low cost may allow you to buy more coverage for less money.
Permanent insurance lasts for your entire life and includes an investment component. The policy generally pays dividends and builds a "cash value" for you that is tax favored. Premiums typically are more expensive than term insurance premiums.
To learn more about the terminology and benefits of life insurance, click here to view the January/February 2004 issue of Kemper Capital Management's online newsletter Loose Change! Issued on a bimonthly basis, this informative newsletter provides
pertinent and timely articles regarding investments, health insurance, and how to save if you are self-employed!
If after reading the newsletter you have any questions or wish to discuss purchasing life insurance, or obtaining additional coverage, contact the friendly professionals at Kemper Capital Management today to discuss your investing needs!
