The IRS wants taxpayers to be wary of scams where contact is purportedly from the agency. While the IRS typically sends a letter as a first step in contacting taxpayers, there are some instances where agents will call or visit. The IRS has prepared a fact sheet to help taxpayers know whether a person calling or visiting their home or place of business is a legitimate IRS employee.
