Recently, a taxpayer received the letter depicted below presumably from the IRS. The taxpayer then contacted their accountant, who was suspicious because it didn't look "right."

Upon review, AICPA's tax team and an IRS stakeholder liaison confirmed that the letter is fake and is an attempt to scam taxpayers.

This serves as a good reminder that you should contact your accountant before you respond to any correspondence you receive from a federal or state tax agency. Keep in mind that scams can come in a variety of forms. At Kemper CPA Group, we have resources available to us to help confirm the legitimacy of such requests.
